Painting Gloomhaven: Cthulu / Plagueherald

Time for some miniature painting. Quite often when I paint miniatures I look at something I previously painted and think: I would like that shade of color, I wonder which one it is.

To help myself in the future, here are miniatures I paint, complete with which colors. Feel free to be inspired.

Today’s miniature is the Plagueherald from Gloomhaven, also commonly referred to as the Cthulu on Gloomhaven forums.

Basing is done using Army Painter uniform grey spray. All paints are from Army Painter.

CloakCultist robe
CoatNecromancer cloak
Purple detailsAlien purple
FaceAlien purple with a tint of Rough iron
Insect partsScaly hide
ClothesCorpse pale
Colors used in the first painting session.

In general these colors have very good coverage. I think all of them are only a single layer. The cultist robe I believe turned out to be too forest mossy green for what I had in mind, and scaly hide to bright.

Let’s add some more color:

PouchBasilisk brown
AmuletGreedy gold
GemstoneCrystal blue
Shoulder pieceMatt black
BeltLeather brown
MaskKobold skin
Wash on bright clothes and insect partsGreen tone
Belt bucklePlate mail metal
Some insect partsAbomination gore
Colors used in the second painting session.

I was going for slimy worm on some if the insect parts, and I am pretty sure I used «Abomination gore» for the tail on the Mindthief with great result, but it did not turn out the way I was hoping in this case. The wash lifted the brighter clothes to where I wanted them, and had a good effect on the insect parts as well.

Time for some final touches:

Wash on cloakBlue tone
Wash on coat and beltDark tone
Highlights on cloak (dry brush)Kraken skin
Oozing poisonDisgusting slime
Some detailsGloss varnish
Colors used in the third painting session.

Quite nice. The oozing poison around the feet didn’t turn out the way I expected, but still ok. Just some basing left: glued “stones” (made from cork) to the base and then dry brushed some of them closest to the feet with the same oozing poison color.

Inconsistent light between the painting/photo sessions affects appearance. Looking forward to playing this character in Gloomhaven!
